Grove House was built as a school around 1839. In the census of 1841 it had 13 male pupils and was run by the Craig family.
It was granted a license to operate as a private female lunatic asylum for 12 patients on 8th August 1852, under the ownership of Doctor Samuel Glover Bakewell. Samuel qualified as a doctor in Edinburgh and trained in Shrewsbury. In 1854 Samuel established an asylum for men in Church Stretton on the site of the Talbot Inn. This was licensed for 16 patients. Following Samuel’s death in 1865 the Church Stretton asylum was bought by William Hyslop but the Grove remained in the family’s hands and was managed by Samuel’s widow Harriet until the late 1870s when her niece Hannah and her husband John Robert McLintock took over the asylum.
After she was widowed in 1883 Hannah ran the Grove for over 20 years until her son took over following her death in 1905. In 1901 there were 34 patients, aged 16-80 from Shropshire, Herefordshire, Gloucestershire, Lancashire, Essex, Worcestershire, Devon, London, Jersey, and Mexico with 15 members of staff to look after them.
The McLintock family continued to run the asylum until “The Grove” finally closed its doors and was demolished in 1969, all that remains now is part of the boundary wall of the property.
On the land were built eight houses in the 1970’s. This was probably one of the largest single building projects the village had ever experienced.
